DELIVERING DONATIONS IN THE MOUNTAINOUS REGION OF RIO DE JANEIRO

No dia 27 de fevereiro, com a ajuda do sr. Samuel, pai da aluna Suelen, o Wah Lum Kung Fu Brasil foi a Teresópolis e Friburgo para entregar os donativos recolhidos na nossa festa de Ano Novo Chinês às vítimas dos desabamentos e enchentes que acometeram a Região Serrana do Rio de Janeiro no mês de janeiro, em virtude de fortes chuvas.

On February 27th, with the help of mr. Samuel, student Suelen´s father, the Wah Lum Kung Fu Brazil went to Teresopolis and Nova Friburgo cities to deliver donations collected in our Chinese New Year celebration to victims of landslides and floods that affected the mountainous region of Rio de Janeiro in January, due to heavy rains, as you can read on these CNN links:

Num carro 4x4 para podermos chegar a lugares de difícil acesso, e acompanhados por uma família amiga do sr. Samuel num jipe, partimos para a cidade de Teresópolis. Nossa intenção era procurar as comunidades necessitadas e não abrigos ou entidades de auxílio, pois infelizmente sabemos que não é raro acontecerem desvios de donativos nesses lugares. Portanto, queríamos entregar diretamente, em mãos, os alimentos, roupas, brinquedos e artigos de higiene que arrecadamos.

Driving a 4x4 car in order to reach remote areas, and accompanied by a family of mr. Samuel´s friends in a jeep, we headed to the city of Teresopolis. Our intention was to look for people in need, not aid agencies, because we know that unfortunately some of the donations are stolen in these places. So, we wanted to deliver all the food, clothing, toys and toiletries we have collected directly to the people in need.

Desta forma, seguindo indicações de moradores locais, rumamos para as regiões de Campo Grande e Bonsucesso, em Teresópolis. O cenário geral da cidade era de destruição, parecia que havia acontecido uma guerra ali, com muitas construções totalmente destruídas.

Thus, following directions from local residents, we headed for the regions of Campo Grande and Bonsucesso in Teresopolis city. The city was partially destroyed, it looked like a war had happened there, with several buildings entirely destroyed.

Regiões que antes eram cortadas por um pequeno córrego agora eram cortadas por um rio de pedras, que foram trazidas pela enorme enxurrada. O tamanho das pedras impressionou também, algumas bem maiores que uma pessoa.

Regions that before were cut by a small stream now are cut by a river of stones, which were brought by the huge flood. The size of the stones also impressed, some one them much bigger than one person.

Visitamos alguns moradores que, apesar da grande tragédia, lutam para reconstruir suas vidas e rotinas. Entregamos alguns donativos para algumas famílias. Numa delas, os brinquedos foram um grande sucesso para as crianças, que haviam perdido totalmente sua casa e seus bens.

We visited some residents that, despite the great tragedy, struggle to rebuild their lives. We delivered some donations to some families. In one family, the toys were a big success for children who had lost his entire house and property with the flood.

Em seguida, rumamos para Nova Friburgo, outra cidade bastante afetada pelas chuvas. No caminho, na região do Campo do Coelho, pôde-se ver que praticamente todos os morros tiveram deslizamento de terra, e muitas casas foram completamente soterradas. É preocupante pois a quantidade de encostas em situação precária é imensa, e uma nova chuva intensa certamente causaria mais deslizamentos e mortes. Em várias casas pode-se ver a marca da água nas paredes externas, mostrando que em alguns lugares a enchente chegou a quase 2 metros de profundidade.

Then we headed to Nova Friburgo, another city badly affected by the rain. On the way, in the Campo do Coelho region, we could see that almost all the hills had landslides, and many houses were completely submerged. It´s fearsome because the number of slopes in a precarious situation is immense, and another heavy rain and landslides would certainly cause more deaths. In some houses you can see the water mark on the outer walls, showing that in some places the flood was nearly 6,5 feet deep.

In central Nova Friburgo another haunting vision that demonstrates the incredible power of the landslides. The main church of the city literally cut in half by the mud that slid along a hillside. It seems the church was hit with a cannon shot, such a big destruction.

No retorno ao Rio de Janeiro, ainda com alguns donativos no carro, encontramos uma família humilde sendo levada numa carroça bem simples. Qual não foi a surpresa deles quando paramos o carro e entregamos alguns sacos com alimentos, roupas e brinquedos para as crianças.

On our way back to Rio de Janeiro, with some donations still in the car, we found a humble family in a pretty simple cart. What was their surprise when we stopped the car and gave them a few bags with food, clothes and toys for the children.

Nós do Wah Lum Brasil nos solidarizamos com as famílias que foram vitimadas por toda essa tragédia, e esperamos que este evento não caia no esquecimento das autoridades. Todo o apoio deve ser dado agora à população das cidades afetadas, para que possam reconstruir suas vidas e sua dignidade.

Wah Lum Brazil are in solidarity with the families who were victimized by this tragedy, and we hope that this event is not forgotten by the authorities. Every support should be given now to the population of the affected cities, so they can rebuild their lives and their dignity.

Ano Novo Chinês 2011 - Ano do Coelho!

O ano de 2011, para os chineses, corresponde ao Ano do Coelho. Segundo a astrologia chinesa, será um ano tranquilo, de menos conflitos e mais diplomacia. O Coelho traz também sorte nos negócios e transações financeiras, e quem plantou no ano passado, colherá seus frutos este ano.

The year of 2011, for the Chinese people, is the Year of the Rabbit. In Chinese astrology, this will be a quiet year, with less conflicts and more diplomacy. The Rabbit also brings luck in business and financial transactions, and those who planted last year, will reap its fruits this year.

Para a família Wah Lum Brasil o ano do Coelho já começou agitado e com boas novas! Primeiramente, as festividades de Ano Novo Chinês, que exigiram muito treinamento e o trabalho de todos. Depois, mas não menos importante, a notícia da 1ª visita de Grão-mestre Chan Pui e sua esposa, Simu Suzy Chan, ao Rio de Janeiro! Enfim, muita coisa para festejar, e obviamente, muito trabalho pela frente para os preparativos!

For the Wah Lum Brazil Family, the year of the Rabbit has started busy and full with good news! First, the Chinese New Year celebration, which required a lot of practice and work from everybody. Then, but not least, the announce of the 1st visit of Grandmaster Chan Pui and his wife, Simu Suzy Chan to Rio de Janeiro! So, a lot of things to celebrate, and obviously a lot of work ahead for all the arrangements!

Enfim, com um pouco mais de um mês de atraso, vamos registrar aqui as festividades de Ano Novo Chinês que realizamos no sábado, dia 05 de fevereiro de 2011.

With a delay of over a month, we´d like to register here the celebrations of Chinese New Year we did on Saturday, February 5th, 2011.

Como foi nossa primeira celebração de Ano Novo Chinês aberta a convidados, era preciso organizar atividades que agraciassem a todos os presentes, tanto crianças, quanto os amigos e familiares convidados, além dos alunos. Desta forma, organizamos a seguinte programação:

As it was our first Chinese New Year celebration open to guests, it was necessary to organize activities that fully satisfy all present, both children, friends and family, and the students. Thus, we organized the following schedule:

De 9h às 10h - Abertura do evento (boas-vindas, baisan) / Dança do Leão
10h - 10:45h - Aulão aberto da Tai Chi Chuan / Atividades recreativas para as crianças
11h - 11:45h - Aulão aberto de Kung Fu
12h - 12:30h - Apresentação da Equipe de Demonstração Wah Lum

Após as atividades da manhã, iríamos todos confraternizar almoçando no restaurante chinês Hua Lian, dentro da Associação Cultural Chinesa do Rio de Janeiro.

After the morning activities, we would have lunch at the Hua Lian Chinese restaurant, inside the Chinese Cultural Association of Rio de Janeiro.

Foi pedido que todos os participantes e convidados doassem alimento não-perecível, água potável, roupas, brinquedos e artigos de higiene pessoal para serem entregues às vítimas da tragédia que abateu a Região Serrana do Rio de Janeiro em Janeiro, quando fortes chuvas causaram inúmeros desabamentos e uma enchente que devastou várias cidades, causando a morte de mais de 900 pessoas, além de centenas de desaparecidos e desabrigados.

We asked that all participants and guests should bring non-perishable food, drinking water, clothing, toys and toiletries to be donated to the victims of the tragedy that struck the mountainous region of Rio de Janeiro in January, when heavy rains caused numerous landslides and a flood that devastated several cities, killing over 900 people, plus hundreds of disappeared and homeless.

Dentre alunos e convidados, havia cerca de 70 pessoas presentes na nossa festa. Muitos fizeram questão de participar das atividades abertas e experimentar um pouco da prática das artes marciais chinesas. Ambas as aulas (de Tai Chi Chuan, comandada pelo aluno sênior Claudio, e a de Kung Fu, comandada pelo Sifu) estavam repletas, e quase não havia espaços para as pessoas! Mas certamente, todos puderam aproveitar esses momentos e se divertir!

Among students and guests, there were about 70 people present at our party. Many of them have participated in activities open and experienced a bit of the practice of Chinese martial arts. Both classes (Tai Chi Chuan, led by senior student Claudio, and Kung Fu, headed by Sifu) were crowded, and there was hardly room for everybody! But surely, everyone could enjoy those moments and have fun!

Enquanto acontecia a aula de Tai Chi para os jovens/adultos, as crianças foram levadas para outra sala onde aconteceriam várias atividades recreativas, como oficina de Origami, pintura facial, e oficina de desenho. Eram cerca de 12 crianças, dos 4 aos 9 anos de idade.

During the Tai Chi class for the youth and adults, all the children were taken to another room where happened several recreational activities such as origami workshop, face painting and drawing workshop. There were about 12 children, with ages from 4 to 9 years old.

A apresentação da Equipe Wah Lum foi bastante dinâmica e empolgante, com muitas formas de mãos-livres, armas, e lutas combinadas.

The Wah Lum Demo Team performance was very dynamic and exciting, with several hand, weapons and 2-men forms.

Após o encerramento dos eventos na academia, fomos todos para o restaurante Hua Lian. Ocupamos 6 mesas, com 10 lugares cada, ou seja, Wah Lum em peso no Hua Lian. Antes do almoço, fizemos a dança do leão no pátio da Associação, conforme combinado com o dono do restaurante, sr. France Lin. Interessante foi reparar que, enquanto tirávamos o leão e o equipamento todo do carro, os chineses começaram a aparecer, olhando com um certo ar de desconfiança e curiosidade... afinal de contas, éramos todos ocidentais, e fazendo dança do leão para os chineses! Mas conforme a dança foi evoluindo, já se via nos rostos dos chineses muitos sorrisos de alegria e satisfação, e ao final, estavam todos aplaudindo!

After the events at the school, we all went to Hua Lian Chinese restaurant. We took 6 tables, with 10 seats each, so "Wah Lum was in the house!". Before lunch, we performed the lion dance in the courtyard of the Association, as arranged with the restaurant owner, mr. France Lin. It was interesting to see that, while we were taking the lion and the entire equipment from the car, the Chinese began to appear, looking with a certain air of suspicion and curiosity ... after all, we were all Westerners doing the lion dance for Chinese! But as the dance evolved, we could see on the faces of the Chinese smiles of joy and satisfaction, and by the end of the performance, they were all clapping!

Para fechar com chave de ouro, depois de pedidos dos chineses, Pedro e Fernando demonstraram uma luta combinada de mãos-livres, que levantou de vez a platéia chinesa.

To close the performance, after requests from the Chinese, Pedro and Fernando performed a 2-men form which once again made the Chinese audience very happy and excited.

Depois disso, com os corpos cansados mas os corações cheios de um sentimento de dever cumprido, todos celebramos o Ano Novo do Coelho com toda a família Wah Lum e seus convidados com um almoço farto e delicioso. Gung Hey Faat Choy!!

After that, with our bodies tired but with our hearts filled with a sense of accomplishment, we all celebrated the New Year of the Rabbit with the whole Wah Lum Family and your guests with a rich and delicious lunch. Gung Hey Faat Choy!

O ano de 2010 foi muito especial para a família Wah Lum. Além de celebrar no mês de Maio, em Boston, 40 anos da introdução do sistema Wah Lum nos EUA, no dia 06 de Novembro foi comemorado o aniversário de 30 anos da inauguração do Templo Wah Lum em Orlando, Flórida.

2010 was very special for the Wah Lum family. In addition to celebrating 40 years of introduction of the Wah Lum system in the U.S., on November 6th was celebrated the 30th anniversary of the opening of the Wah Lum Temple in Orlando, Florida.

Foi um final de semana intenso, repleto de atividades que serviram para, acima de tudo, integrar e unir ainda mais toda a família Wah Lum, e para celebrar a realização do sonho de um visionário, Grão-mestre Chan Pui.

It was an intense weekend filled with activities that further united the whole Wah Lum family, and celebrated the realization of the dream of a visionary, Grandmaster Chan Pui.

Mas como Kung Fu significa "trabalho duro", para que haja uma grande festa é preciso muito trabalho de todos! E os trabalhos começaram já na tarde de 6a feira, com a foto oficial com Grão-mestre Chan, todos os sifus, instrutores e alunos diante da entrada do Templo. Havia certamente mais de 100 pessoas presentes na foto, fora os amigos e familiares que estavam presentes para aproveitar e fotografar o momento. O estacionamento do Templo estava lotado, e havia um clima alegre de reencontro e celebração.

But Kung Fu means "hard work", and to have a great party takes hard work from everyone! The work began on the afternoon of Thursday 6th, with the official photo with Grandmaster Chan, all Sifus, instructors and students in front of the entrance of the temple. There was certainly over 100 people in the photo, not counting friends and family who were present to enjoy and photograph the moment. The parking lot at the Temple was crowded, and there was a joyful atmosphere of reunion and celebration.

Após a foto, foram realizados ensaios para o show de exibição das escolas, que aconteceria dia seguinte no auditório de um colégio local. Comandados pela Sifu Mimi, todos ensaiaram duro para que tudo corresse perfeitamente bem. Depois disso, reunião com os sifus que trabalhariam de árbitros no campeonato interno Wah Lum, últimas orientações, e de volta para o dormitório descansar.

After the photo, reharsals were conducted for the exhibition show, that would happen next day in the auditorium of a local college. Led by Sifu Mimi, everybody worked hard for everything to go perfectly. After that, meeting with Sifus that would work as judges at the Wah Lum tournament, last instructions and back to the dorm to rest.

No sábado pela manhã o campeonato começou cedo no Templo, com competições de luta e tai chi chuan. Por volta das 12h a competição de formas teve início no ginásio do colégio Colonial High School. Após um dia cheio de competições, com um total de 220 atletas exclusivamente do Wah Lum, fomos para o auditório do colégio para ajudar nos preparativos do show.

On Saturday morning the tournament started early in the Temple, with sparring and tai chi competitions. At around 12pm the forms competition began in the gymnasium of the Colonial High School. After a full day of competitions, with a total of 220 athletes exclusively from Wah Lum system, we went to the school auditorium to help the preparations for the show.

Com mais de 900 lugares lotados no auditório, o grande momento chegou! Dança do dragão, do leão, exibição de tambores, formas de mãos-livres, armas, lutas combinadas.... e, obviamente, Grão-mestre Chan demonstrando mais uma vez toda sua jovialidade apesar dos 72 anos! Foi realmente um momento memorável.

With more than 900 seats in the auditorium full with a great audience, the big moment arrived! Dragon and lion dance, drumming, hand and weapons forms, 2-person sets.... and, of course, Grandmaster Chan demonstrating once again all his energy and joviality despite his 72 years! It was really a memorable moment.

Mas as comemorações não acabaram aí. Domingo fomos todos para um cinema grill (uma mistura de lanchonete com cinema), onde seria exibido o documentário sobre a vida do Grão-mestre Chan. Primeiro, hora das homenagens e presentes. Em seguida, mais de uma hora e meia de imagens totalmente impressionantes (foi indescritível assistir Grão-mestre Chan no auge de seu vigor físico demonstrando movimentos e formas...), depoimentos tocantes e informações até então desconhecidas (ao menos para mim). Tenho certeza de que todos saíram daquele cinema felizes e repletos de orgulho de fazerem parte desta família, e com uma extrema gratidão por todo o esforço feito pelo Grão-mestre Chan Pui para tornar seu sonho realidade.

But the celebrations did not end there. Sunday we all went to a cinema grill (a mix of diner with cinema), where would show the documentary about Grandmaster Chan´s life. First, time for homages and gifts. Then, over an hour and a half of spectacular images (it was indescribable watching Grand Master Chan at the peak of his physical condition performing movements and forms...), sincere testimonials and unknown information (at least for me). I'm sure that everyone left the cinema happy and proud to be part of this family, and with extreme gratitude for all the effort made by Grandmaster Chan to make his dream a reality.

Excursão Wah Lum na China visita o Templo Shaolin

No dia 9 de julho um grupo de membros da família Wah Lum saiu dos EUA em direção à China para uma viagem de 16 dias. Durante a viagem, além de treinar kung fu em Dengfeng, o grupo participou de um grande campeonato em Hong Kong, visitou o memorial do Sijo Lee Kwan Shan, o Templo Wah Lum em Guangzhou, o memorial de Wong Fei Hung em Foshan, e o famoso Templo Shaolin.

Last 9th July a group of Wah Lum Family members left USA toward China for a 16 days trip. During the trip, beyond training kung fu in Dengfeng, the group has competed in a big tournament in Hong Kong, visited the Sijo Lee Kwan Shan Memorial, the Wah Lum Temple in Guangzhou, the Wong Fei Hung Memorial in Foshan, and the famous Shaolin Temple.

Lá, para surpresa geral, foram convidados a fazer uma demonstração para o abade do templo, Venerável Yongxin! Uma verdadeira honra, e também um reconhecimento pelo grande trabalho feito por Grão-mestre Chan Pui em promover as artes marciais chinesas no mundo.

There, for everybody´s surprise, they were invited to perform to the temple abbot in person, Venerable Yongxin! A true honor, e also a recognition for the great work done by Grandmaster Chan Pui to promote the Chinese martial arts through out the world.

A tempestade da noite de 18 de julho durou até a manhã do dia 19 no Templo Shaolin. Apesar do tempo horrível, mestre Chan Pui, 33ª geração de discípulos leigos do Templo Shaolin prestou seus respeitos ao Venerável Xingzheng, abade de 29ª geração do Templo Shaolin na Floresta de Pagodes com seus alunos Wah Lum sob a orientação e orações dos monges Shaolin.

Night storm of July 18th lasted till the morning of 19th in Shaolin Temple. Despite the terrible weather, Master Chan Pui, 33rd generation lay disciple of Shaolin Temple paid his respect to Ven. Xingzheng, 29th generation abbot of Shaolin Temple in the Pagoda Forest with his Wahlum students under the guidance and prayer by Shaolin monks.

Os alunos Wah Lum demonstraram técnicas do estilo Wah Lum para o abade de Shaolin, Venerável Yongxin, que considerou notável o feito de Grão-mestre Chan Pui em promover o kung fu chinês nos EUA, e o excelente show dos alunos Wah Lum. O abade de Shaolin também teve uma conversa amigável com Chan Pui e seus irmãos Shaolin Yongqian e Yonghai.

Wahlum Kungfu students performed Wahlum style techniques to Shaolin Abbot, Ven. Yongxin, who highly evaluated Grandmaster Chan Pui's accomplished promotion of Chinese Kungfu in USA, and the excellent show by Wahlum students. Shaolin Abbot also had friendly talks with Chan Pui and his Shaolin brothers Yongqian and Yonghai.

Mestre Chan Pui introduziu o sistema Wah Lum nos EUA e é atualmente o único mestre ensinando este sistema naquele país. Ele é sucessor de 6ª geração do sistema Louva-a-deus do Norte e discípulo leigo de 33ª geração do Templo Shaolin, China. Foi ele quem organizou com sucesso a primeira demonstração de kung fu dos monges Shaolin nos EUA.

Master Chan Pui introduced the Wahlum System to the United States and is currently the only master in USA. teaching this system. He is the 6th generation successor of the Northern Praying Mantis System and 33rd generation lay disciple of the Shaolin Temple, China. He is the very fist one to successfully organize the first Shaolin monk's Kungfu show in USA.

A história dos Chans nos EUA começa quando Pui Chan saltou de um navio ancorado em Newark, New Jersey, e nadou até a costa para começar uma vida nova.

The Chans' story in the U.S. begins as Pui Chan jumps off a ship docked in Newark, N.J., and swims to shore to start a new life.

After struggling through restaurant kitchen jobs in the Chinatowns of New York City and Boston, he returned to his love of martial arts. Their other daughter, Tina, helps with children's classes at the temple.

Pui and Suzy Chan met in Boston. She was a Jamaican immigrant of Chinese ancestry and became a singer of Top 40 American songs at restaurants. He frequented one of those restaurants in Boston and always asked for her performance of the Cuban song "Guantanamera" — until one day she found out that he was her secret fan.

They moved to Orlando in the late 1970s, seeking more room and an affordable place to buy property for his dream of a traditional kung-fu school. When they opened their east Orange "temple" in 1980, it was surrounded by woods, so they chose the name "Wah Lum" — which means "dense forest" and was the name of his kung fu school in China.

Shouting words in Cantonese, they stretched their legs, practiced poses and made shapes with their hands, quickly working up a sweat in the open room — where statuettes of slim Buddhas stared from an altar above. They worked without the comfort of air conditioning because kung-fu practitioners believe that a warm environment is better for the body.

Almoço em família e entrega de certificados

Tradicionalmente na cultura chinesa, assuntos importantes costumam ser tratados e celebrados diante de uma mesa repleta de comida.

Traditionally in Chinese culture, important matters are usually discussed and celebrated in front of a table full of food.

Para fazer jus à tradição, no último dia 03 de Julho a família Wah Lum se reuniu após o treino de sábado (intenso como sempre!) para almoçar no restaurante da Associação Cultural Chinesa do Rio de Janeiro. Seria apenas mais uma ocasião de confraternização entre os membros da família se não fosse por um motivo em especial: foram entregues os certificados para os alunos aprovados no teste de nivelamento realizado em duas etapas (teórica e prática) no mês de Maio.

Following the tradition, at last 3rd July the Wah Lum Brazil family has gathered after Saturday practice (heavy as always!) for lunch at the Chinese Cultural Association in Rio de Janeiro. It would be just another opportunity for socializing among family members if not for one particular reason: the students who has successfully passed on the level test conducted in two stages (written and practical) in May have received their certificates.

This occasion is always special for the students because, with the certificates signed by Grand Master Chan Pui himself, they are oficially and internationally recognized as members of the International Wah Lum Kuoshu Association, belonging to the 9th generation of the system.

Como sempre, o almoço foi bastante animado. Após receberem seus certificados, os alunos homenageados dividiram com a turma suas impressões sobre a importância do Wah Lum Kung Fu em suas vidas. Infelizmente os alunos André e Luiz não puderam estar presentes, mas em breve receberão seus certificados (mas não pensem que vão fugir do discurso!).

As always, lunch was quite exciting. After receiving their certificates, the students shared with the group their impressions about the importance of Wah Lum Kung Fu in their lives. Unfortunately the students Andre and Luiz could not be present, but soon they will receive their certificates (but do not think they will escape the speech!).

Diferente de outras modalidades de artes marciais, no kung fu tradicionalmente não se utiliza graduação por faixas coloridas. Atualmente existe um grande número de escolas que utilizam o sistema de graduação por faixas como uma forma de estimular os alunos, baseadas na idéia de que a mudança de faixa é uma forma concreta e palpável do aluno perceber sua evolução, uma espécie de recompensa pelo seu esforço e dedicação.

Unlike other styles of martial arts, in traditional kung fu we don´t use color sashes for grading. Currently there are a large number of schools using this grading system as a way to inspire students, with the assumption that getting a new sash is a easier and tangible way for the student to understand its evolution, a kind of reward for their effort and dedication.

As faixas, quando utilizadas, têm uma função bastante importante: servir como um suporte para as regiões lombar e do abdômen, muito requisitadas durante a prática.

The sashes, when used, have a very important function: to serve as a support for the lumbar and abdomen areas, very stressed during practice.

Entretanto, nas escolas de kung fu normalmente as relações hierárquicas são estruturadas de outra forma. Influenciadas pelas idéias confucionistas de importância da família, do culto aos antepassados e do respeito aos mais velhos, a graduação e todas as relações entre os praticantes de uma escola foram organizadas considerando-se que todos eram membros de uma só família.

However, in kung fu schools typically the hierarchical relations are structured differently. Influenced by Confucian ideas of the importance of family, ancestor worship and respect for elders, graduation and all relations between practitioners of a school were organized considering that all were members of one family.

Lembrando que os termos acima não são títulos ou rótulos fixos. São relativos, pois você pode ser uma coisa em relação a uma determinada pessoa e outra coisa diferente em relação à outra. Por exemplo: você pode ser sihing (irmão mais velho) de um colega de treino seu, mas ao mesmo tempo você pode ser sidai (irmão mais novo) de outro que treina há mais tempo que você. O sihing de seu sifu é seu sibaak, e ao mesmo tempo ele é sijat do seu sibaakgung (que para ele é sibaak).

Remembering that the above terms are not titles. They are relative, as you may be one thing for a person and something else in relation to another. For example, you may be a particular student´s sihing (older brother), but at the same time you can be sidai (younger brother) of another student who started to practice before you. Your sifu´s sihing is your sibaak, and at the same time he is sijat of your sibaakgung (who is their Sibaak).

A cultura tradicional chinesa é cheia de formalidades e cortesias, e apesar da China moderna ser bem diferente da China romântica de séculos atrás, muitas normas tradicionais de etiqueta e de conduta social ainda são rigorosamente observadas. Isto é uma grande verdade principalmente em banquetes e jantares, já que compartilhar uma refeição é talvez o mais importante passatempo para os chineses.

Traditional Chinese culture is full of formalities and courtesies, and even though modern China is nothing like the romantic China of centuries past, many traditional standards of etiquette and social propriety are still strictly observed. This holds especially true for diners and banquettes as sharing a meal is perhaps the most favored pastime of the Chinese.

O maior banquete chinês comemora o ano-novo lunar, ou Festival da Primavera (chun jie). Para estrangeiros convidados a participar das festividades de ano-novo, é importante ter consciência das formalidades sociais tradicionais para evitar “perder a face” – tanto a sua quanto a do anfitrião. Obviamente, a maioria dos chineses não irá exigir que seus convidados estrangeiros sigam tais regras rígidas de conduta cultural; entretanto, o anfitrião certamente irá apreciar o esforço realizado pelo convidado, já que isto mostraria um profundo apreço e respeito pelas suas tradições.

The largest Chinese banquet commemorates the Lunar New Year, or Spring Festival (chun jie). For foreigners invited to share in the new year festivities, it is important to be aware of traditional social formalities so as to avoid "losing face" - both yours and the host's. Granted, most Chinese will not hold their foreign guests accountable for such strict standards of cultural conduct; nevertheless, the host can certainly appreciate the effort put forth as it shows a deep appreciation and respect for their traditions.

No entanto, uma circunstância especial se mantém para os artistas marciais chineses. Muitos praticantes tradicionais, especialmente de estilos do sul, seguem a etiqueta muito seriamente. A special circumstance holds, however, for Chinese martial artists. Many traditional practitioners, especially in southern systems, observe etiquette very closely. It is believed that the social behavior of a student directly reflects the level and quality of instruction imparted by the master, and in this light, it is absolutely imperative for a serious student to take the time to familiarize themselves with standards of traditional etiquette so as to avoid inadvertently disrespecting one's master and lineage.

A primeira e principal norma de cortesia a se observar e se dirigir adequadamente ao mestre. Um aluno deve sempre cumprimentar o mestre adequadamente. Os títulos podem variar dependendo da escola ou sistema, portanto se alguém for novo na escola e não tiver certeza de como se dirigir ao mestre, um simples “Olá” com um sorriso gentil e um contato visual amigável deve ser o suficiente.

The first and foremost standard of courtesy to observe is properly addressing the master. A student should always greet the master appropriately. Titles may vary depending on the school and system, so if one is new to a school and unsure of how to address the master, a simple "Hello" with a gentle smile and friendly eye-contact should suffice.

Para complementar o cumprimento, uma variedade de gestos pode ser feita. Muitos artistas marciais chineses formalmente se cumprimentam com o “baoquan,” ou “abraçando o punho.” Este gesto é feito cobrindo o punho direito fechado com a palma esquerda. Para tornar este gesto ainda mais polido, pode-se adicionar uma leve inclinação de ombros à frente. To complement a greeting, a number of gestures can be made. Many Chinese martial artists formally greet each other with a "baoquan," or "hugged fist." This gesture is made by cupping a right-handed fist with the left palm. To make this gesture more polite, you may add a slight bow at the shoulders. "Kowtowing," or kneeling, is another traditional gesture for greeting the master, but these days it is very uncommon. If done over dramatically, especially in front of a large crowd, it can be considered quite rude. If one feels it to be sincerely appropriate, such a gesture should be made privately in an intimate setting.

Durante uma viagem, há formalidades específicas a serem igualmente observadas. Se estiver a pé, sempre caminhe ao lado ou atrás de seu mestre. Caminhar na frente é apropriado somente quando o mestre não sabe o caminho. Uma vez que o destino seja alcançado, abra a porta para seu mestre ou, se ela estiver trancada, bata à porta em nome de seu mestre e dê um passo atrás. Se estiver viajando em algum transporte público, sempre abra e segure a porta para o mestre. While on the road, there are specific formalities to observe as well. If on foot, always walk beside or behind the master. Leading is appropriate only when the master does not know the way. Once a destination is reached, open the door for the master or, if the door is locked, knock on behalf of the master and then step back. If traveling by charter, public transport, or chauffer, always open and hold the door for the master. Always insist on carrying the master's luggage, and be prepared to pay for the trip and tip the driver when appropriate.

When driving the master, be sure to meticulously observe all traffic regulations and always drive the appropriate speed. Avoid sudden or jerky steering, getting lost, or anything else that may discomfort the master along the ride. Also, refrain from playing music that is excessively loud or explicit. If the master is driving, sit comfortably and quietly, and try not to disturb the master with small or trivial questions. Always be ready to cover any toll or parking charges that may arise. Upon arrival, be sure to thank the master for driving.

Sharing a meal with the master is an amazing opportunity that should not be taken lightly (especially a Chinese New Year meal, as this holiday is reserved for immediate family). One must remember that not all lessons are taught in a classroom setting, and often times simply observing how the master conducts himself in common activities, such as a meal, can give valuable insight as to how martial principles transcend simple punches and kicks. In this light, sharing a meal with the master can be a golden opportunity to further one's understanding and practice.

A primeira coisa a ser observada num banquete é a disposição das cadeiras. Nunca se apresse para pegar uma cadeira ou se sente imediatamente. Quando jantar com o mestre, é sempre melhor ser convidado a uma cadeira. O mestre deve sempre ter a cadeira principal, por exemplo, a cadeira que fica de costas para a parede e posicionada de modo a observar a porta de entrada ou a cozinha. The first thing to observe at a banquet is the seating arrangements. Never rush to pick a seat or sit down right away. When dining with the master, it is always best to be invited to a chair. The master should get the power seat, i.e. the seat with its back to the wall and positioned to observe the front door and/or the kitchen. From the power seat, the master's esteemed guests, spouse, or disciples sit alongside. The other guests typically fan out from there in order of seniority.

Se perguntar algo ao mestre, esteja certo da pergunta ser significativa e concisa, de preferência sobre algum assunto que os outros convidados possam se beneficiar também. Em geral, porém, deve-se manter um silêncio educado de modo a criar espaço para o mestre compartilhar informações de seu interesse.

While seated, sit calmly and acutely present, and always exercise good posture. Avoid fidgety, nervous, or other outwardly anxious behavior. Have a relaxed smile, and make good eye contact with people. Avoid speaking out of turn, and be especially sure not to whisper, gossip, snicker, or giggle with a neighbor. When speaking, always have appropriate tone and volume. If asking the master a question, be sure the question is meaningful and concise, ideally one that the other guests can gain from too. In general, however, one should politely observe silence so as to create a space for the master to share information at their leisure.

O ato de comer somente começa quando o mestre faz o convite. Ao comer seja modesto, educado, e lento – aprecie e saboreie mordida a mordida. When drinking alcohol, take small, respectful sips unless specifically invited by the master to "gan bei" (dry cup). It is always best to avoid refilling your own glass - especially if the beverage is alcoholic. As it is a celebration, guests are expected to become intoxicated; however, one should always maintain composure, as lewd, drunken behavior is a huge "loss of face." If you do not drink, it is important to inform the master prior to the meal. If you feel you have had enough, it is okay to gently decline further drinks.

At the end of a meal, always leave a small bite on your plate when you finish. If you clear your plate, this means you have not had your fill, and it is then the host's responsibility to provide more food. After the meal, it is okay to give the master a gift; however, gift-giving should be modest so as to avoid offending the other guests who did not bring anything. It is expected that the giver will gently persist until the gift is accepted; however, you should be sensitive to a sincere refusal. When the gift is accepted, offer the gift with both hands.

Also, never give a gift that is sharp, such as scissors or a knife, as it can represent cutting ties. Finally, be careful when offering gifts of food for it could symbolize poverty or despair.

Though many of these formalities seem excessive or overbearing, they are very important. Making the extra effort to observe courtesy is one of the best ways to leave a positive impression with the master and help to further establish a strong dynamic. In Chinese culture, the relationship between master and disciple is sacred, and in that light, the sincere student should make every effort to display the highest level of respect.

- Respeito, perseverança, humildade, companheirismo, são outros valores também bastante praticados dentro do treinamento do Kung Fu. Esse conjunto de virtudes, esse código moral e de comportamento ético é conhecido pela cultura chinesa como wude, e todo artista marcial sério e comprometido deve cultivá-lo, a fim de atingir o estágio máximo dentro da prática que é o auto-conhecimento - acrescenta.

- Respect, perseverance, humbleness, fellowship, are other virtues also practiced in Kung Fu. 40 years of Wah Lum in the USA!

Neste dia 01 de maio foi comemorado na cidade de Boston o aniversário de 40 anos de Wah Lum Kung Fu nos EUA. A primeira escola Wah Lum nas Américas foi inaugurada pelo Grão-mestre Chan Pui na Chinatown de Boston em 1970, e chamava-se New England Martial Arts Association.

On May 1st in Boston it was celebrated the 40th anniversary of the Wah Lum Kung Fu in the U.S.. The first Wah Lum school in the Americas was opened by Grandmaster Chan Pui in Boston's Chinatown in 1970 and was named New England Martial Arts Association.

Foi uma grande festa organizada pelo anfitrião Sibaak Bob Rosen, que hoje é responsável pela escola em Chinatown. Demonstrações de dança do dragão, dança do leão, formas de mãos-livres, formas com armas, lutas combinadas, tai chi chuan e quebramentos (palma de ferro e cama de pregos) entusiasmaram a platéia presente.

It was a great celebration organized by the host Sibaak Bob Rosen, who is now responsible for the school in Chinatown. Performances of dragon and lion dance, hand and weapons forms, two-men set forms, tai chi and breaking (iron palm and nail bed) thrilled the audience.

Realmente, é um exemplo para todos e uma lenda viva do kung fu.

To everyone's surprise and to close the big night in high style, Grandmaster Chan Pui performed not just one but THREE forms! A hand form, a spear form and a sword form! And, as always, impressed everyone with his youthfulness and energy, demonstrating his traditional amazingly very low stances and full leg openings, despite having over 70 years old. Indeed, he is an example for us all and a living legend of kung fu.

No dia seguinte à festa, a convite de Grão-mestre Chan Pui, o mestre Lu Jun Hai (do estilo Mizong, mesmo estilo de Huo Yuanjia, personagem de Jet Li no filme "Mestre das Armas") deu um seminário de uma forma de Mizong para os alunos Wah Lum. O seminário foi um sucesso!

The day after the exhibition, Grandmaster Chan Pui´s invited Master Lu Jun Hai (Mizong style, same style of Huo Yuanjia, Jet Li's character in the film "Fearless") to teach a hand form seminar from his style (Mizong) for Wah Lum students. The seminar was a success!

Para fechar as celebrações, à noite houve o tradicional banquete de comemoração num restaurante chinês. Discursos, entrega de homenagens, e a certeza de que com a união e o companheirismo demonstrados, a família Wah Lum vai permanecer junta por pelo menos mais 40 anos!

To close the celebrations, there was the traditional banquet in a Chinese restaurant. Speeches, gifts, and the confidence that with the unity and fellowship shown, the Wah Lum family will stay together for at least another 40 years!

Na antiga China, durante a Guerra dos Três Reinos (207 – 265 d.C.), o general Zhuge Liang era conhecido como o “Dragão Adormecido”. Suas façanhas durante este período tornaram-se lendárias e ninguém conseguia capturá-lo em emboscadas, traições ou estratagemas. Para conseguir isso, o general Zhuge Liang cultivou cuidadosamente a reputação de homem mais ardiloso e astuto da China. Tão eficaz quanto uma arma, sua reputação amedrontava antecipadamente o inimigo, o que lhe rendia uma vantagem inicial em qualquer situação. Assim, enquanto o inimigo permanecia atordoado num primeiro encontro, o general Zhuge Liang desenvolvia seu plano e o vencia.

In ancient China, during the Three Kingdoms Period (207-265 AD), general Zhuge Liang was known as the "Sleeping Dragon". His achievements during this period have become legendary and no one could catch him in ambush, treachery or trickery. To accomplish this, general Zhuge Liang carefully cultivated a reputation as the more cunning and crafty man of China. As effective as a weapon, his reputation frightened the enemy in advance, which earned him an early advantage in any situation. Thus, while the enemy stood stunned at first meeting, general Zhuge Liang developed its plan and won the battle.

Segundo conta uma história, enquanto chefiava as forças do Reino Shu, o grande general Zhuge Liang despachou o seu enorme exército para um campo distante a fim de descansar numa cidadezinha com somente uma centena de seus soldados. Repentinamente, os seus sentinelas trouxeram-lhe a notícia de que um exército inimigo liderado por Sima Yi se aproximava, composto por mais de 150 mil soldados. Para seus homens, a situação de Zhuge Liang parecia ser desesperadora. Seu grande inimigo Sima Yi iria finalmente capturá-lo.

According to a story, while leading the forces of Kindgom of Shu, the great general Zhuge Liang dispatched his huge army to a distant field to rest in a small town with only a hundred of his soldiers. Suddenly, his sentinels brought him the news that an army led by Sima Yi was aproaching, with over 150.000 soldiers. To his men, the situation seemed hopeless. His great enemy Sima Yi would finally capture him.

Sem lamentar seu destino ou perder tempo tentando imaginar como tinha sido apanhado nesta cilada, o general Zhuge Liang ordenou que suas tropas arriassem as bandeiras, abrissem os portões da cidade e se escondessem. O general Zhuge Liang, então, vestiu um manto taoísta e sentou-se na parte mais visível do muro da cidade. Com bastante incenso aceso à sua volta, ele ficou cantando enquanto dedilhava seu alaúde. Pouco tempo depois, do alto muro viu o exército inimigo aproximando-se na forma de uma falange interminável de soldados fortemente armados. Fingindo não ter percebido nada, o general Zhuge Liang parecia não se importar com a aproximação ameaçadora do exército inimigo; ele continuou a cantar e a tocar seu alaúde. Logo, o exército inimigo estava diante dos portões da cidade. Sima Yi estava à frente do exército e reconheceu Zhuge Liang prontamente.

Without regret his fate or spend time trying to imagine how he had been caught in this trap, general Zhuge Liang ordered his troops to haul down the flags, open the city gates and go into hiding. General Zhuge Liang then dressed a Taoist robe and sat in the most visible part of the city wall. With plenty of incense burning around him, he was singing while strumming his lute. Shortly thereafter, from the high walls he saw the enemy approaching with an endless phalanx of heavily armed soldiers. Pretending not to have noticed anything, general Zhuge Liang didn´t bothered with the ominous enemy army, he continued to sing and play his lute. Soon the army was before the city gates. Sima Yi was ahead of the army and Zhuge Liang acknowledged promptly.

Com os soldados impacientes atrás de si, atiçando suas armas e revolvendo-se dentro de suas armaduras, prontos para atravessar os portões escancarados da cidade, Sima Yi hesitou. Ele conteve seus homens e estudou o general Zhuge Liang sobre o muro. Em seguida, ordenou a imediata retirada do seu exército.

With the soldiers impatient behind him, poking their arms and shaking their armor, ready to cross the wide open city gates, Sima Yi hesitated. He held his men and studied general Zhuge Liang. Then he ordered the immediate withdrawal of its army.

Quando Sima Yi chegou à cidade vazia ficou perplexo ao encontrar o general calmo e impassível numa atitude típica dos grande sábios. O general Zhuge Liang evidentemente estava brincando com ele, desafiando-o a cair numa de suas intrincadas armadilhas. Ou o general poderia estar realmente dando sua última cartada, sozinho e desesperado. No fim das contas, não havia como ter certeza. Mesmo com um forte exército ao seu imediato dispor, Sima Yi tinha tanto medo do general Zhuge Liang que não ousou se arriscar. Ele tinha lutado com o general Zhuge Liang dezenas de vezes e o conhecia muito bem. Algo estava errado. Algo tinha que estar errado!

When Sima Yi came to the empty city was puzzled upon seeing the general calm and impassive in an attitude typical of the great sages. General Zhuge Liang was evidently playing with him, challenging him to go into one of his intricate traps. Or the general could be really giving his last stand, alone and desperate. Ultimately, he could not be sure. Even with a strong army at his immediate disposal, Sima Yi was so afraid of general Zhuge Liang he did not dare to take a chance. He had fought with General Zhuge Liang dozens of times and knew him very well. Something was wrong. Something had to be wrong!

Ao menor deslize durante os desafios da vida, você pode ficar vulnerável e ser atacado por todos os lados. O mundo que o ser humano acabou construindo para si, uma máquina fria e maniqueísta, infelizmente não perdoa falhas. Entretanto, você pode usar as engrenagens desta máquina diabólica em seu benefício; usando apenas a sua reputação, você pode intimidar e vencer seus “inimigos”. Seja um exemplo de caráter para todos e torne a sua reputação inexpugnável. Ao mesmo tempo em que você cresce como ser humano, passa a estar sempre alerta aos ataques em potencial, frustrando-os antes que eles sejam concretizados. Mesmo estando em uma situação desfavorável se em comparação à dos seus “inimigos”, eles irão temê-lo por conhecerem a sua reputação. E, ao final da história, “arriscando a sua vida” ao defender a sua própria reputação, você irá salvá-la.

At the slightest slip during life's challenges, you may be vulnerable and being attacked from all sides. The world that man has built for himself, a cold and Manichaean machine unfortunately does not forgive failure. However, you can use this evil machine for your benefit; using only your reputation, you can intimidate and defeat your "enemies." Be an example of character to all and make your reputation inexpugnable. While you grow as a human being, you always stay alert to potential attacks, avoiding them before they are implemented. Even if it is a disadvantage compared to your "enemies", they will fear you because they know your reputation. And at the end of the story, "risking your life" to defend your own reputation, you will save it.

Para inaugurar nosso blog, trago aqui traduzido um texto escrito pelo aluno sênior Josh Conway, da escola do Sibaak Bob Rosen, em Boston. Ela espelha fielmente nosso pensamento a respeito do treinamento Wah Lum.

Uma carta aos alunos novos ou potenciais de um aluno um pouco mais velho.

Kung Fu: Practical Philosophy and the Martial Path
A letter to the new or prospective student from a slightly older student.

Wah Lum tem uma longa história que traz consigo tradições que interligam a escola a muitos aspectos da cultura chinesa, incluindo a filosofia. É difícil medir a importância dos três pilares da filosofia chinesa (Taoísmo, Budismo e Confucionismo) para a história da China e para todas suas instituições culturais, grandes ou pequenas. Além do mais, estas tradições filosóficas continuam a permear e, verdadeiramente, formar a China e suas instituições ainda hoje. Além do conhecimento marcial contido nos movimentos, uma nova visão de mundo é construída com a prática do kung fu tradicional.

Wah Lum has a long history, with deeply held traditions that intertwine the school with many aspects of martial and Chinese culture, including philosophy. The importance of the three pillars of Chinese philosophy (Taoism, Buddhism, and Confucianism) to the history of China, and all of its cultural institutions large and small, is difficult to overstate. What’s more, these philosophical traditions continue to permeate, and indeed shape, China and its institutions even today. Beyond the martial knowledge contained in the movements, a culture and worldview is woven into the fabric of traditional kung fu.

O que o aluno não encontrará aqui são cabeças raspadas, rituais monásticos ou a imposição de se aderir a alguma crença em particular. Apesar da famosa linhagem da escola traçar sua história para mais de um monastério diferente, a escola de hoje é dirigida por um templo de kung fu e não um templo budista. Como kung fu em português significa “trabalho duro”, o que o aluno encontrará aqui é um grupo de artistas marciais dedicados que valorizam e continuamente se esforçam para cultivar a paciência, força de vontade, humildade e amizade através da prática física do kung fu. Coisas valiosas requerem trabalho duro.

What a student won’t find here are shaved heads, monastic rituals, or imposed adherence to particular structures of belief. Though the famous lineage of the school traces its history to more than one monastery, today’s school is led by a kung fu temple, not a Buddhist one. As kung fu in English means “hard work,” what a student will find is a group of dedicated martial artists who value and continually strive to cultivate patience, will power, humility, and fellowship through the physical practice of kung fu. Things of great value require hard work.

O caminho marcial prima por uma filosofia prática já que ele é enraizado numa arte prática distinta: o combate. Através da prática de movimentos de luta e das aplicações o artista marcial descobre suas forças e fraquezas, e como desenvolver ambas. Através da prática diligente você pode começar a mudar seus hábitos mentais e modo de agir. Primeiramente você deverá praticar uma sequência tanto tempo que ela não mais vai necessitar de um pensamento consciente para ser executada. Eventualmente, você poderá notar que você usará uma defesa ou contra-ataque sem sequer pensar. Mais tarde você irá se perceber olhando para o mundo ao seu redor por uma perspectiva diferente: seja em virtude das mudanças em seu interior, sua relação com o mundo ao seu redor, ou uma combinação de ambos. O treinamento do corpo há muito é reconhecido como um meio de atingir uma contemplação profunda, de se treinar a mente. Muitos dos mestres que desenvolveram o kung fu e treinaram outros nesta disciplina o fizeram com um objetivo maior em mente. The martial path prizes practical philosophy as it is rooted in a distinctly practical art—combat. Through the practice of fighting movements and applications martial artists discover their strengths and weaknesses, and how to improve both. Through diligent practice, you can begin to change your mental habits and framework. At first you may practice a sequence long enough that it no longer takes conscious thought to execute the movements. You may eventually notice that you can use a defense and counter without thinking. Still later, you may find yourself looking at the world around you with a different perspective: whether due to changes within yourself, your relationship to the world around you, or a combination of both. The training of the body has long been recognized as a means to achieve deeper contemplation, to train the mind. Many of the masters who developed kung fu and trained others in the discipline did so with this ultimate goal in mind. This ultimate goal is much larger than the trappings of fighting or the glory of championships. These kinds of changes in perspective constitute the framework for practical philosophy. It’s this philosophy that is at the heart of the traditional martial path.

De maneira prática, você encontrará uma variedade de material: formas de mãos-livres, lutas combinadas, armas, técnicas de longo alcance, de curto alcance, movimentos duros e suaves, defesas, ataques, chutes, rasteiras ou arremessos. O kung fu o desafia a melhorar seu equilíbrio, coordenação, amplitude de movimento, fluidez, força, resistência – e até mesmo sua memória. Mas, embora este seja um caminho pessoal, ninguém o percorre sozinho. Haverá muita orientação, apoio e estímulo amigável de todos aqueles que estudam e treinam para melhorarem a si próprios. A comunidade oferece uma lente através da qual se pode enxergar seu progresso e os inevitáveis tropeços, e garante que o sistema não apenas exista, mas que cresça e mude contínua e dinamicamente. Assim como uma técnica requer um bom lutador para que ela funcione, um sistema respeitável precisa de uma boa comunidade para mantê-lo respeitável. Tal praticalidade é encontrada em todos os elementos do caminho marcial.

As a practical matter, you will find a depth of material: hand forms, two person sets, weapons; long range techniques, short range techniques; hard and soft movements; defenses, strikes, kicks, sweeps, and takedowns. Kung fu will challenge you to improve your balance, coordination, range of motion, fluidity, strength, power, endurance—even your memory. Though it’s your path, no one walks alone. There will be plenty of guidance, support, and friendly nudging from all who study and train to better themselves. The community presents a lens through which to see your progression and inevitable stumbles, and insures the system itself does not just exist, but continues to grow and dynamically change. Just as any technique requires a good fighter to work, a venerable system needs a good community to keep it venerable. Such practicality is found in all elements of the martial way.

Apenas porque você pratica kung fu não significa que você irá encontrar paz, contentamento, maestria física, habilidade de luta ou iluminação. Kung fu pode apenas fornecer um caminho: são os seus próprios passos que levam ao seu sucesso. Embora você possa ser surpreendido por aquilo que você vai descobrir, você só obterá de sua prática aquilo que você dedicou a ela.

Just because you practice kung fu does not mean that you will find peace, contentment, physical mastery, fighting skill, or enlightenment. Kung fu can only provide a path; it’s the culmination of your own steps that add up to your success. Though you might be surprised by what you uncover, you will only take from your practice as much as you put into it.
